Color can play a major role in understanding Feng Shui. When it comes to your home, the colors in a room can influence the way the light enters a room or stays in a room. Colors can affect your mood. Some colors provide a sense of well-being while others give a feeling of increased energy.
Pastel cool colors tend to have more “yin” energy while bright, warm based colors are more “yang” energy. The idea with Feng Shui colors is to establish a balance between yin and yang. Yin energy is considered more feminine and calm while yang energy is more masculine and bold.
Along with the moods they can create, there are also specific colors associated with different areas of a house. Using these colors tend to increase the chi association:
- White is associated with the northeast and stimulates motivation, quick thinking, sharp mindedness and knowledge
- Yellow in the center of the room adds power, attention, opportunities and change
- The north is for cream or translucent finish. It means independence, spirituality and sexuality
- Gray or silver in the northwest means self-control, dignity, control, organization and responsibility
- Pink in the west signifies romance, playfulness or contentedness
- Black in the southwest means realistic, practical or intimate
- Purple in the south is passion, sociability, more emotion and quick thinking
- Dark green or blue in the southeast means imagination or creativity, sensitivity or new ideas
- Bright green in the east means ambition, confidence and self-esteem as well as energy and enthusiasm
While paint is typically associated as a means of bringing a specific color to a room, a wall’s colors don’t have to be the only means of achieving a specific color for an area. Pillows of a certain color can be added in a living room, while large paintings with the associated colors can help achieve your goals for Feng Shui in that area. Wall hangings, plaques, and lamp shades with specific colors are yet another way to bring the desired color to a room.
The colors of furniture and drapes can also bring about the desired associations for Feng Shui. You can always add a slip cover to a specific piece of furniture, even when changing the furniture to achieve a desired color is not practical. Color can also be used to bring increased focus or importance to a specific item of furniture.
Feng Shui may traditionally be associated with the placement of furniture to create energy. But make no mistake, Feng Shui colors can play a major role also and should never be discounted.
