Feng Shui Decorating

Feng Shui can bring about just the life you want — if you believe in its power to help you realize your dreams, achieve riches and have dynamic relationships. Fortunately, there are practical things you can do to harness its power. Starting with your home, here are some easy Feng Shui decorating tips.

Because Feng Shui is associated with chi or energy in a room, there are several things that you do to increase the flow of energy in a room. This begins by making sure a room is not too cluttered and involves:

  • Placement of furniture to assure chi is not blocked
  • It’s also important to consider whether furniture, and other elements in a room, are not placed in such a way that chi flows too quickly which may occur if all of a room’s furniture is placed against walls
  • Chi will flow better when clutter is moved, in regard to the items in a room that are not used
  • Furniture should be placed in such a way there are pathways between rooms or spaces to assure there is an unencumbered flow of chi between areas
  • Purchase furniture with rounded edges to avoid the points
  • You can make a room more even by selecting furniture that is lighter in weight and smaller in proportions
  • Lighting can be effective by helping to open up small areas and give the appearance than an area is larger
  • Use natural light whenever possible

Also important is balancing the five elements associated with Feng Shui — earth, metal, fire, water and wood. How do you create these elements in your home? Consider using plants for the earth and the color red (either with walls or items in a room) to create fire, along with red candles and lights.

Make sure none of the elements are out of balance, replacing wood elements with fire or metal if you already have too many wood elements. Likewise, water, metal and fire should be replaced with one of the other elements if too much of one exists in a living space.

Colors are also important in the flow of Feng Shui in your home. Different colors can create different moods and impact the flow of energy. How does color impact Feng Shui? Consider this:

  1. A room’s color can not only influence the way light enters a room, but also how and whether it stays in the room
  2. Colors have an affect on an individual’s mood
  3. Some colors often provide an individual with a sense of well-being, while other colors create a sense of increased energy. Colors that are bright and warm create more yang energy; pastels and cool colors create more yin energy and Feng Shui is focused on balancing yin and yang. Yin energy is considered more feminine and calm, with yang energy thought of as more masculine and bold

Other considerations for increasing Feng Shui in your home include:

  • Using a Bagua that divides a room into nine segments, each of which represents a different area of your life
  • Including wind chimes that will dispel chi that has become stagnant
  • Fresh flowers will help produce romance and better relationships
  • Mirrors will increase the chi in a home. Don’t allow it to be reflected out of a room, though
  • Hanging a crystal in a room will increase its energy
  • Only allow activities in the areas that they are designed for, such as only sleeping in your bedroom

Make the most of your home’s energy is not difficult when you know the colors and placements associated with Feng Shui, along with what to avoid.
